House of Preserved Memories II

House of Preserved Memories is a visual representation of time slowed down to a halt, to take a moment to appreciate the beauty in time’s passing. Dried flowers, the main material for this work, symbolizes moments and memories itself, seemingly frozen in its state. Them being dried implies that at some point these flowers were also at the peak of their beauty, lush and brimming with life. Yet now, even if time has worked its charm on these flowers, there is still beauty to be appreciated in them. Its form, a simple gable roof, is the simplest shape that can be associated to a house — a fundamental form of architecture where people dwell, rest, and store their belongings. The form symbolizes two things: one being the house is a starting point where most core memories of people are made, and two as an actual structure to house those memories.

House of Preserved Memories draws attention to the beauty and appreciation to the passing of things, as well as the gentle characteristic of the sadness that that fact evokes.

This artwork is part of my work for Confluence, a curatorial project designed to foster a dynamic and mutually enriching collaboration between artists and art critics. Confluence seeks to explore the interplay and synergy between the creative process and critical discourse, ultimately deepening the understanding of contemporary art. The curatorial project aspires to be a platform where artists and critics converge, creating a space where the creative and analytical worlds collide and merge.

Each layer of tracing paper relates directly to the object being described by the text, then finally revealing itself once all sheets are stacked together.

About the Project

In this curatorial project, participants are presented with a dual task, requiring them to craft two descriptive texts. The first text centers around describing the physical attributes of an orange fruit, while the second text delves into the vivid portrayal of an imagined image. Both texts are subject to rigorous scrunity and review by the curator, undergoing revision as necessary to attain the status of a final approved version.

Subsequently, these finalized descriptive texts are ingeniously incorporated into a larger conceptual art piece. Participants are then challenged to submit an artwork proposal, outlining their vision and approach towards actualizing the conceptual idea. This preliminary step serves as a crucial prelude to the subsequent stages of production.

Through this intricate process, the participants not only hone their descriptive writing skills but also embark on a transformative journey towards the fusion of literary expression and visual artistry. The conceptualization and realization of the artwork are tightly interwoven, generating a dynamic and multi-layered final artistic creation.

The exhibit ran from July 30 to August 18, 2023 at The Den, ending with a Curator Walkthrough and Artist Talk at 98B COLLABoratory.
